One can become so jaded in Austin. Live music? Scores of options every night. Why bother? The acts come and go. Who could keep up with all of it?
Even the experts can’t keep track. People think Rose Reyes, who oversees the music biz at the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of local acts. She told me at the Official SXSW Austin Music Showcase, however, that when she asks folks their favorite band, she often hasn’t heard of them. There are that many worthy acts.

Blown by the winds of chance, I took refuge at the Ginger Man the first night of SXSW Music. Clearly, many in the crowd were still still indulging their St. Patrick’s Day itch. Yet out on the patio, a goodly number were primed for the House of Songs unofficial showcase.
So I lingered. First up was Salesman, a four-man Austin act with a remarkable talent for unusual, pushed-out rhythms and enraptured instrumentals. (Were there four onstage? Seems I counted just three, but the crowd was thick …) I’m keeping an eye out for them in the future.

There was TOTALLY, like, this REALLY NORMAL girl who was partying on Lafayette Street in NYC, and she came down with this REALLY WEIRD INFECTION, and when she went to the doctor to get it checked out THEY WERE, LIKE, RILLYRILLY FREAKED OUT, and they said: "HAVE YOU TOUCHED ANYTHING UNUSUAL LATELY?" and she was all, "WELL, I MADE OUT WITH A BARTENDER AT THIS PLACE ON LAFAYETTE" and they were all like, (wait for it...): "You've been exposed to a bacterium that ONLY LIVES ON DEAD BODIES!" ::: A research team from Philadelphia argues in this week’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that gay and lesbian patients are frequently excluded from medical experiments, for no good reason, New York Times reports. The authors say the scientific rationale for the exclusions, if any, is not at all clear. “Researchers should be held to careful scientific reasons,” they write, “when they develop exclusion criteria that are based on sexual orientation.” Brian Egleston, the lead author of the study, said he suspects the exclusion is often not deliberate, but that trial designers simply copy ... Australian TV viewers are crying foul after comedian Fiona O’ Loughlin called Bindi Irwin ‘creepy’ and poked fun of the 11-year-old wildlife conservationist’s seemingly drug-induced enthusiasm on TV, Wednesday.
Phone lines and message boards were flooded with complaints on her round table bit, describing Steve Irwin’s daughter “a freak show” on Australian quiz program Spicks and Specks.

An ex-boyfriend of Lady GaGa is suing her for $30.5 Million dollars. His name is Rob Fusari, and he claims that he hasn’t received the royalities Stefani(Lady GaGa), owes him. Fusari also claims that he made her into what she is today, including co-writing some songs such as “Paparazzi” and “Beautiful Dirty Rich” and creating the stage name of “GaGa.”

It's the third Friday of the month and there's free boats of french fries at Capitol Hill's Pike Street Fish Fry from 5pm - 7pm. That's right free! Along with $2 pints of Flat Tire beer. The place gets really crowded on Free Fries Fridays so don't wait till the last minute.Pike Street Fish Fry has really improved in quality and value since the first time I visited this place though the stuff they serve is pretty greasy.
