Theory into Action.  »  a guy named dave
Crashed in Brooklyn last night with my bud, Patrick, who's also the designer behind the NEMstudents. It was a trek and half getting to Columbia this afternoon, but Cleve was there speaking with students. It reminded me of when he spoke at 1FEST, intimately with students. Very real. About their concerns and the direction of this movement. He spoke about the need for students to take charge, to take hold, but for a greater need to develop an understanding of civil disobedience...I spoke with students after the event. We need to think bigger, we agreed. Nobody is going ...

BOOK REVIEW: Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky  »  The Mad Professah Lectures
Although Children of Time  starts off relatively slowly (do we really need to read pages of exposition from the perspective of an alien?) things gets VERY real very quickly as there are certain shocking event that cause the trajectory of the story to ricochet in a very surprising direction.I'm happy to say that I was completely unspoiled about many details of the story and thus was completely surprised and engrossed when the full ambitious scope of Tchaikovsky's novel slowly revealed itself. I have endeavored to keep those aspects of the story out of this review so that others can ...

A Little Danish  »  A Life in the Day
We managed to sneak in a mini-vacation last weekend for our anniversary, heading to the small Danish town of Solvang, CA. The village lies to the north of Santa Barbara, probably a 150-mile drive from where we live in Long Beach. Neither of us had visited Solvang in years, and we finally decided that this would make for the perfect getaway. The only negative part was the drive. Normally, the trip takes roughly two hours by car, but we hit traffic from the getgo and, once we reached the Los Padres National Forest, we contended with a ...

New Donation Yoga Class | Castro San Francisco  »  Iyengar Yoga Teacher, cycles 585 miles for AIDS Charity
Where is there Affordable Yoga Classes in San Francisco? In San Francisco, where the median rent has rose to well over $3,055 per month, it has become increasingly challenging for the local Bay Area yoga enthusiasts [unless you're a cash cow] to maintain a yoga practice while affording $15.00 to $22.00 per yoga class  (x) 3 days a week (x) 4 weeks a month  = $180.00 / $264.00 per month.” Therefore, it has become even more crucial that yoga instructors be accessible to yoga students regardless of financial status......Well ..... Recently, I had a conversation with Arts Saves Lives Curator, Thomasina DeMaio. And ...

iTunes Selection: For Our Anniversary  »  A Life in the Day
We spent our anniversary weekend in the small California town of Solvang: a Danish community not too far north of Santa Barbara. I actually began a post using Blogspot's iPhone app on Saturday while we were there. Unfortunately, clicking "Save" didn't actually save the post, so I need to start from scratch. In the meantime, enjoy The Ronettes singing Be My Baby in honor of our anniversary: ...

Angelique Kerber is having an amazing year. She has reached two major finals (2016 Australian Open and 2016 Wimbledon and won one of them). She also reached the Gold medal match of the 2016 Rio Olympics, losing to Monica Puig. However, today was not one of them. She was two sets away from ending Serena Williams near-record 183-weeks-long hold on the #1 ranking on the WTA tour but was blown off the court in the finals of the 2016 Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati  by Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova, who has a surprisingly ...

N.K. Jemisin Becomes First Black Woman To Win Hugo Award for Best Novel  »  The Mad Professah Lectures
Wow! Defying the predictions of most prognosticators, Nora Jemisin was the surprise winner of the 2016 Hugo Award for Best Novel for The Fifth Season. (See my A-/B+ review.) By my reckoning, Jemisin win is historic for multiple reasons: she's the first Black woman (and first Black person) to win science fiction's most prestigious award. And she did it after two years of intense debate (most of it online) in the speculative fiction community about the meaning, necessity and importance of diversity in the speculative fiction community. She also did it despite being nominated ...
