McCain the flip-flop King  »  Where's the Outrage?
TCR has compiled a list of position reversals for John McCain.  The list is pretty impressive.  61 flip-flops and we are still counting! From TCR: National Security Policy 1. McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite. 2. McCain insisted that everyone, even “terrible killers,” “the worst kind of scum of humanity,” and detainees at Guantanamo Bay, “deserve to have some adjudication of their cases,” even if that means “releasing some of them.” McCain now believes the opposite. 3. He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached ...

Jesse Helms  »  Where's the Outrage?
Evildoer Jesse Helms died a few days ago at age 86. Senator Helms worked as hard and as long as he could to make life even more difficult for black folks, gay folks, the poor, and anybody else he did not like. Yet I find no satisfaction in his passing. For one thing, Mr. Helms got the best of his foes. He served five terms in the United States Senate. He left the Senate on his own terms. He was never defeated for election. He lived a long life. Senator Helms never paid any price for his misdeeds. When somebody like former South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond lives to be 100, you realize that “what goes around comes ...

I drill, You drill, we all drill in ANWAR  »  Where's the Outrage?
I was recently sent an e-mail arguing for for drilling in ANWR. This e-mail dovetails very nicely into a recent Republican strategy which can be summed up in a phrase — drilling our way out of the oil crisis. For everyone over the age of 25, we’ve been here before. In late 1970s, as oil prices began to skyrocket, we had a debate in this country over oil and energy independence. Our president at the time was Jimmy Carter. President Carter argued for conservation. It was Carter and a Democratic Congress who pushed for hire fuel standards in cars. ...

HB - Did Obama change his position on Iraq?  »  Where's the Outrage?
Barack Obama has taken some heat from the left over the last 2 - 3 weeks. Well, on Thursday of last week, Barack Obama seems to leave the door open to changing his Iraq policy. The media went crazy over the weekend. It is was flip-flop-a-thon. “There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience,” said Alex Conant, a Republican National Committee spokesman. From Reuters: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama waded into controversy on Thursday over his plans to withdraw U.S. combat troops from Iraq, first saying ...

WTC 7 finally explained  »  Where's the Outrage?
I’m not a conspiracy guy. I don’t see badness everywhere but the video of the World Trade Center building 7 collapse was odd. It looks like an implosion. I’m very interested in hearing the explanation. It may go something like this - Are you going to believe me or your lying eyes? From RS: A new report by BBC 2’s “Conspiracy Files” claims that the US National Institute of Standards and Technology is preparing to release a long awaited report on the collapse of World Trade Center 7, which fell on Sept. 11, 2001, about seven hours after WTC 1 ...

Doctors and Medicare reimbursement  »  Where's the Outrage?
Now, before everyone gets all teary eyed, I can think of no other profession that has had 20 years of salary cuts. 20 years. My father made more money in 1979 as a family practitioner than the average family MD mades today. This whole system is crazy. Ever wonder why MD’s are hurried and upset? I support the AMA on this issue. I have called my Senators. We’ll see if it will do any good. The honest truth is that our government has tried to balance the national budget on the backs of physicians for over 20 years. Since physicians are not ...
Wimbledon - going to 5th set  »  Where's the Outrage?
I have watched a ton of tennis in my day.  I have seen all of the greats over the last 30 years.  Today’s match will go down as one of the greatest of all time.  It doesn’t matter who wins.  It is already a classic.  Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are both playing great tennis.  I think that Nadal is playing a little better right now but Federer is holding serve.  One break and this match is over. It is starting to rain. ShareThis ...

Book Review  »  Where's the Outrage?
I recently read the book Pennsylvania Avenue: Profiles In Backroom Power by John Harwood and Gerald F. Seib. Both authors are Washington political correspondents. This book is a series of brief chapters about a variety of Washington political players. Some of those profiled are lifelong insiders. Some came to insider power through unusual channels. Others are looking to change or reform the system in some way or another.  If you are a close follower of politics, you may feel much of the ground covered is familiar. Though I doubt there are many who could claim they are aware of the careers of all the men and women discussed.   In any case, ...

Farve making a comeback?  »  Where's the Outrage?
Brett Farve is arguable the greatest quarterback of all-time. I think that would be a fun argument. No matter who you would rank higher (Aikman, Young) almost everyone has Farve in the top 10. He just announced his retirement back in March. Now, there are rumors that he is thinking about coming back this season. Brett has been thinking and talking about retirement for the last 3 years. He has had a great career and last year he had a fantastic season. He was this close to a super bowl. It is time for him to hang up the cleats. ...

Around the Web  »  Writer Philosopher Culture Warrior
My brother is coming down from the north to spend a little time with the family so I won't have time to finish my article about the recent DC gun ban decision. Instead I will give you a sampling of what has caught my eye around the web.First off is a controversial article by the man known as The Gun-Toting Liberal. We can see his view of the recent supreme court decision and a moderates view of the Democratic party. While there is some rhetoric I think it's a solid piece with a great insight. Here a snippet from ...

The 464th Armored are spending their 3rd 4th of July in Iraq. They were apart of the Thunder Run which was one of the important maneuvers used to take Baghdad. It is sad that they are back in Iraq. Jessie Helms dead at age 86  »  Where's the Outrage?
I will have a lot more to say about Senator Jessie Helms later on this afternoon. Right now, I can say that Helms should be admired by all. Whether you believe in his politics or not, he did stand by his convictions. He also showed everyone what a determined Senator can do. Think Progress points out that former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, who ran against Helms in 1990, was defeated in part by a racially based ad which re-enforced North Carolinians worst racial fears. From NYT: Jesse Helms, the former North Carolina senator whose courtly manner and mossy drawl ...

Dolley Madison  »  Where's the Outrage?
Dolley Madison, the former Dolley Payne, was maybe the first First Lady to be public figure on her own account. She was smart enough to land James Madison and he was smart enough to listen to her counsel. From her White House profileWith her charm and her laughing blue eyes, fair skin, and black curls, the young widow attracted distinguished attention. Before long Dolley was reporting to her best friend that “the great little Madison has asked…to see me this evening.”……Dolley’s social graces made her famous. Her political acumen, prized by her husband, is less renowned, though her gracious tact smoothed ...

6th straight month of job losses  »  Where's the Outrage?
You can get out your protractor and pocket calculator and try to tell me that we aren’t in a recession because of this or that but we are in a recession. The question I have is how ugly is this market going to get. Obama calls on Bush and Congress to do more. McCain has stated that people are hurting and let’s not do anything. I look for some thoughtful analysis of these numbers from the Economic Policy Institute. Update: GM shares have dropped below $10 per share. From CNN.com: Employers trimmed jobs from their payrolls in June ...
