This is an Egyptian ensemble movie, following lots of different characters who all have only one thing in common: their connection to the Yakobean building in Cairo. It is also quite a depressing movie, in that it is a story of the decline of Cairo as well as showing the terrible influence religion can have on different people's lives. I always find it difficult to write about a movie that I didn't like, but that lots of other people have enjoyed a lot. For many, the story of Jesse James may be well-known. For people like me who are not familiar with it, the title is a bit unneccessary - it gives away a bit too much of what will happen. Brad Pitt does another good role in this movie - his brooding Jesse James is quite convincing. I can't say Casey Affleck impresses me as much, beautiful though he is. I find this movie thought-provoking. That is a good thing. It is also provoking, as well as a bit amateurish.It deals with the organization NAMBLA, the group wants "to end the oppression of men and boys who have mutually consensual relationships", according to their home page. I am a firm believer in "age of consent" laws. David Hockney is an interesting artist. I like some of his artwork and I've read his book on the "Secret Knowledge". I would not mind seeing a movie portraying his life. But for some reason, this movie (from 1974) failed miserably at telling me anything interesting about Hockney. Or about anyone else, for that sake. Through interviews with Hockney and his friends we learn - well, not a lot, actually. Maybe I should have known a lot more about Hockney before seeing this movie.At least the movie shows that I don't automatically like movies with naked guys in swimming pools. ...

The good thing about predictable movies is that you can decide within a few minutes if you really want to see the movie or not - as you pretty much know what you'll get. On the other hand, you always hope it's not as predictable as you fear...This movie is okay. The actors are good, and there is nothing upsetting about the story. It's just rather boring. He is a master at getting seemingly hopeless men in touch with seemingly unobtainable women - but turns out not to be a master in getting himself in the same position with his dream girl.
