Did you have any doubt? Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to reprise his role as Iron Man in a sequel. The comic book actioner about a billionaire weapons maker who invents a superhero suit to fight evil did close to 100 million in business in its first three days. All of the characters could have died and the world could have been blown up, and that amount of money would have insured a sequel.

As I predicted Iron Man grossed $100 mil on opening weekend. Total worldwide cume as I type this is already past $200.Some initial much lower estimates claimed that Iron Man was not the household name that Spider-Man or Batman were and are and couldn't therefore gross in their level. I went into Iron Man pretty much expecting another fluffy superhero movie... but I was very pleasantly surprised... it seems to be so much more than that.The opening sequence is pretty damn spectacular, and is definitely one of those scenes that just grabs you and throws you around a little before the movie settles in.It's a really good mix of the marginally fluffy, the very serious and the "realistic" superhero stuff... it doesn't always dwell on the "how" (like "how does this chest mounted power thing actually work"), but instead concentrates on the "why" and the results, which ... I saw Iron Man over the weekend at the Ziegfeld. Here's the Iron Man Official Site.It rocks.It's so great to see Robert Downey, Jr. back on his game.I've always thought he was great since Heart and Souls in 1993.As for the film, the special effects are great too...This is one sci-fi film where the performer actually upstages the magnificent special effects.Jeff Bridges is virtually unrecognizable. L'Homme de FerWe joined the throngs of people over the weekend to see Iron Man. I will admit to some hesitation on my part when I learned that Robert Downey, Jr. would play Tony Stark. Definitely not a typical role for him, and with his past antics, I found it difficult to think of him in a superheroic way. But seeing the movie changed that. He was funny, charismatic, very likeable and seemed very suited to the role of arrogant-a**hole-turns-goodguy. His new flick Iron Man beat the crap out of competition such as that Patrick Dempsey crapfest Made of Honor over the weekend. It brought in $201 million over the weekend. That's a lot of ducats. Made of Honor only made 15.5 million. I think it's the combined hair disaster of Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan. Seriously, she's got some sort of secretary bob and and he's got a pouf. Stop. Now.

Iron Man is a film that had everything going against it. It languished for years in development hell, went through no less than three potential directors, at least two other title stars (including Tom Cruise - yikes!), and eventually became the first film financed by a new film studio division of Marvel Comics. Once director Jon Favreau signed on as director, the sparks of doom didn’t stop flying even then.
