First SJP wanted to be a gay icon (see old post: A History of ...Sarah Jessica Parker) and now she wants to be "America's Most Fabulous Mom" Basically she's planning to cover all female archetypal roles before she dies. She's already done plucky child star (Annie), brainy nerd girl (Square Pegs), longsuffering girlfriend (The Robert Downey Jr years), blonde ditz (LA Story), trophy girlfriend (First Wives Club), gay icon/fashion muse/sex symbol/career girl (Sex & The City) so why not? But she has a lot of competition for this latest title.Though I often express dismay at my favorite ...
I'm not as familiar with the Marvel Comics character Iron Man as I am with other superheroes, but I do in general like the big-screen, big-budget treatments of those courageous men and women in tights. Some (Superman, Batman, X-Men, Spider-Man) have fared better than others (Sheena, Brenda Starr, the Punisher, Captain America) to be sure. On paper, Iron Man has great credentials. The first release from Marvel's own production company, it boasts a budget in excess of $100 million, a cast full of Academy Award nominees and even a winner (Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and ...
As I predicted Iron Man grossed $100 mil on opening weekend. Total worldwide cume as I type this is already past $200.Some initial much lower estimates claimed that Iron Man was not the household name that Spider-Man or Batman were and are and couldn't therefore gross in their level. But what people rarely considered in opening weekend monetary terms is that Iron Man is super accessible. You don't need that familiarity. Think about it: It's not magic. It's not a mutation. No radioactive arachnid required, no fake science like cosmic or gamma rays to be explained. His ...
I went into Iron Man pretty much expecting another fluffy superhero movie... but I was very pleasantly surprised... it seems to be so much more than that. The opening sequence is pretty damn spectacular, and is definitely one of those scenes that just grabs you and throws you around a little before the movie settles in.It's a really good mix of the marginally fluffy, the very serious and the "realistic" superhero stuff... it doesn't always dwell on the "how" (like "how does this chest mounted power thing actually work"), but instead concentrates on the "why" and the results, which ...
I saw Iron Man over the weekend at the Ziegfeld. Here's the Iron Man Official Site.It rocks. It's so great to see Robert Downey, Jr. back on his game.I've always thought he was great since Heart and Souls in 1993.As for the film, the special effects are great too...This is one sci-fi film where the performer actually upstages the magnificent special effects.Jeff Bridges is virtually unrecognizable. And that's a compliment to his acting, too.See this one... It's great fun! ...
L'Homme de FerWe joined the throngs of people over the weekend to see Iron Man. I will admit to some hesitation on my part when I learned that Robert Downey, Jr. would play Tony Stark. Definitely not a typical role for him, and with his past antics, I found it difficult to think of him in a superheroic way. But seeing the movie changed that. He was funny, charismatic, very likeable and seemed very suited to the role of arrogant-a**hole-turns-goodguy. In fact, I liked everyone in the film, from Gwyneth Paltrow's girl-Friday Pepper Potts to Jeff Bridges' ...

Howdy, y'all. JA from MNPP here, contributing a lil' conversation to The Film Experience whilst Nat's off rubbing elbows and nobbing hobs with the Indianapolis elite. So it's May 2nd, and with today's release of The "Robert Downey Jr. Is Really Worth The Insurance Costs, Guys" Movie, it marks Summer Movie Season. Cue shit blowed up real good. Not to knock The Cinema of Sweaty Season - did I mention I'm typing this from the spot I've been camped out at for three months waiting for Speed Racer to open next week? Christina Ricci is Trixie, yall! - but ...
Iron Man is a film that had everything going against it. It languished for years in development hell, went through no less than three potential directors, at least two other title stars (including Tom Cruise - yikes!), and eventually became the first film financed by a new film studio division of Marvel Comics. Once director Jon Favreau signed on as director, the sparks of doom didn’t stop flying even then. Robert Downey, Jr. was announced to fill the title role, and immediately tongues wagged. “Downey? he’s one messed up guy!” Then I realized that so was Downey's character, Tony Stark. ...
