Yesterday, on the 75th anniversary of the day Nazis broke into his offices and burned hundreds of books, Berlin dedicated a stretch of the Spree River to sex researcher and gay rights activist Magnus Hirschfeld. Source: The Local , Associated Press via Haaretz Berlin today renamed a promenade along the Spree River after Magnus Hirschfeld, a sex researcher and pioneer of the German gay rights movement. The Hirschfeld promenade is in the government quarter, diagonally across from the German chancellery. The city's Charite hospital also opened a new exhibition of his work called Sex Burns. Seventy-five years ago, the Nazis ransacked the offices of German sex-researcher and gay-rights activist Magnus Hirschfeld, seizing hundreds of books that were burned in a towering pyre four days later. To mark the day Tuesday, Berlin dedicated a stretch of the Spree river to Hirschfeld, while the city's Charite hospital opened a new exhibition of his work called "Sex Burns."
