Dykes of Mercy
Dykes of Mercy get together once a month to chat, drink wine and put money in a hat.... and then give it away! The idea is based on a uniquily South African concept - a Stokvel. Our giving stokvel started with a really simple plan. If you are South African (do other people do this?!), you probably keep some change in the ashtray of your car for those occasions when someone on the side of the street appeals to you for a little cash. They are children, they are women with babies, they are unemployed men, they are millions of South Africans who live below the poverty line. Those people probably make 100 a week – maybe more. Imagine what a difference it would make if that person gets an amount of cash equivalent to three months of standing on a street corner! (think about what a difference it would make to you if someone gave you three time’s your monthly salary –no strings attached!) My friends and I decided to pool together our five and two rand donations once a month, and hand a wad of cash to someone we saw who is in need. We wanted the person on the side of the road, or the small organisation to be able to buy something they needed – like a cell phone to get work, or school shoes for a child, or food for the month, or medication. We give the money with absolutely no restrictions or instructions or limitations on what its for. [
